Teleradiology and Radiology Pioneer
About NightHawk Radiology Services
NightHawk Radiology Services is the world’s leading provider of radiology services for hospitals, clinics and imaging centers across America. NightHawk is a radiology coverage pioneer, with years of experience in radiology and teleradiology, as well as an accreditation by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
NightHawk Radiology Services has developed an innovative approach to the delivery of radiology services by operating centralized, state-of-the-art reading centers in Sydney, Australia and Zurich, Switzerland. Staffing U.S.-trained, board-certified radiologists specializing in emergency radiology, these locations are ideally situated for U.S. care because when it’s the middle of the night in Boston, it’s daytime “Down Under.” When it’s early morning in Los Angeles, it’s daytime in the Alps. From the centralized reading centers, NightHawk radiologists interpret exams and report the results to attending physicians in real-time, usually less than 20 minutes.
Thus, whether it’s a head trauma from an accident on a rural road or chest pains in a major metropolitan area, patients receive high-quality, rapid care from some of the country’s most accomplished– and alert – radiologists no matter where they are or when they need help. In addition to its accreditation by The Joint Commission (JCAHO), NightHawk fully supports and is in compliance with the teleradiology standards set by the American College of Radiology (ACR), as well as the patient privacy standards of HIPAA.
The Need for Help in Coverage
New diagnostic radiology applications are continually being developed to diagnose urgent medical concerns such as strokes, blood clots in the lungs and appendicitis faster and more accurately.
While this is good news for patients, the increase in emergency-related scans is putting the squeeze on an already small pool of radiologists. Further stretching this pool of radiologists, over 40 percent of emergency radiology scans occur at night – when fewer doctors are available to read them.
NightHawk was created as an innovative way to address this widening shortage of radiologists. NightHawk’s U.S. and overseas facilities, staffed by U.S.-trained, board-certified radiologists, operate to ensure that scans are evaluated during daylight hours by the alert, awake, expert doctors.
The NightHawk Name
In 1994, NRS founder Dr. Paul Berger initiated the country’s first nighttime reading service. It was his operations manager who coined the phrase “nighthawk radiology.” He had flown night missions in Vietnam, and the helicopter pilots were referred to as nighthawks. Today, the term “nighthawking” is used as a generic description of overnight teleradiology services, but NightHawk Radiology Services remains the leading radiology coverage company in its class
